Why we’re Here: Bringing People Together

Recently, we were inspired by Simon Sinek, author of “Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action,” to define the “why” behind our role as a CPA firm:

The following is part of a series illustrating our “why.” 

Tax season or “busy season,” as accountants call it, runs from about mid-January to mid-April each year. During these months, the Abdo, Eick & Meyers Wellbeing Committee kicks into high gear as well, hosting weekly staff events designed to promote wellbeing. More than health and wellness, the events focus on one or more of the following aspects of wellbeing: social, community, financial, physical, and emotional. 

Mostly the events are centered on social and emotional wellbeing to help our staff cope with the stress of the season. Some of the events have involved bringing in chair massage therapists, catered dinners, and specialty lunches. Others have been tied to holidays such as Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. One of the most popular events is our “Bingo Break,” where staff members are encouraged to take a half-hour break to join their coworkers in a short game. Another favorite: the office Easter egg hunt. 

Most important, these events give our staff a reason to come together, whether it’s to share a quick bite or a laugh. 

For many, tax season can feel lonelier than other times of the year. Full workloads and deadlines have a habit of gluing everyone to their desks. It can be easy to go weeks without talking about anything else besides work. But when we’re able to take a breather and engage in meaningful conversations, we end up with clearer heads and stronger bonds. 

And with a more cohesive community, we’re able to better serve our clients during a critical season.
