Practice safe holiday giving with the Tax Exempt Organization Search tool

Holiday season is nearly here, and many taxpayers are beginning to think about giving to charity. Meanwhile, thieves are busy setting up charity scams. Before sending money, it’s a good idea to check the legitimacy of a charity using an IRS resource known as the Tax Exempt Organization Search tool. You can use it check to see if the charity is in good standing with its federal tax status and filings. This includes learning when a charity’s tax-exempt status has been revoked. Also, if you itemize deductions and hope to secure a tax deduction, it’s important to determine whether the organization you give to is eligible for tax-deductible contributions.
