Deadline approaches to begin receiving required minimum distributions

March 17, 2023

Did you or someone you know turn 72 in 2022? For most of these taxpayers, April 1, 2023, is the last day to begin receiving required minimum distribution (RMD) payments from traditional IRAs, 401(k)s and similar retirement plans. This deadline is for those who haven’t already taken their first RMDs. Normally, RMDs must be taken annually by Dec. 31 to avoid penalties. This means that those who receive their first RMD (for 2022) by April 1, 2023, will need to take another one (for 2023) by Dec. 31, 2023. (Starting in 2023, retirees can wait until age 73 to start receiving RMDs.) If you need help, contact our team or read the IRS FAQs by clicking here.
