New Sick Leave LawsWill They Affect You?
November 25, 2015
On Sept. 7, 2015, President Obama issued an Executive Order establishing paid sick leave for employees of federal contractors and subcontractors.
Although these laws will not become effective until Jan. 1, 2017, they may require you to take action in the near future—if you are affected, that is.
According to the Executive Order, the following federal contracts will be impacted:
- Procurement contracts for construction covered by the Davis-Bacon Act
- Contracts for services covered by the Service Contract Act
- Contracts for concessions
- Contracts entered into with the federal government in connection with federal property or land and related to offering services for federal employees, their dependents, or the general public
If these laws apply to you—or even if you think they may apply to you—I strongly recommend reading the Executive Order in its entirety. It’s possible there are steps you must begin taking now in order to be compliant by the effective date.
The Department of Labor is expected to provide additional details by Sept. 30, 2016, so we should know more at that time.
